David Cunningham - Information

David Cunningham's first significant commercial success came with The Flying Lizards' record 'Money', an international hit in 1979. His work crosses many genres of music, including work for television, film, contemporary dance, and many collaborations with visual artists and filmmakers.

Since the release of his first album 'Grey Scale' in 1976 David Cunningham has worked as a musician and record producer, engaging with an eclectic range of people and music, from pop groups (This Heat, Palais Schaumburg) to improvisers (David Toop, Steve Beresford) to Michael Nyman's music for Peter Greenaway's films and with Ute Lemper. In later years he has produced albums by Joanne Robertson and O Yama O.

In parallel with these relatively conventional music activities his installation works have explored the real time experience of the acoustic qualities of a space. This body of work began with an installation at Chisenhale Gallery London (1994) and was subsequently developed for a series installations at the Biennale of Sydney (1998), the Tate Triennial of Contemporary British Art 2003, ICC Tokyo, Ikon Gallery Birmingham, 1m³ Lausanne and most recently at Laure Genillard London.

Film and television work has included two long continuing collaborations - with William Raban, recently '72-82', 'London Republic' and 'Available Light' and with Ken McMullen, most recently with 'Οχί An Act of Resistance' and McMullen's earlier films 'Being and Doing', 'Zina' and (alongside Michael Giles and Jamie Muir) 'Ghost Dance'. Related work has included the production and treatment of sound for installation and broadcast artworks by Susan Hiller, Cerith Wyn Evans, Laure Prouvost, Martin Creed, Amikam Toren, João Penalva, Ceal Floyer, Ian Breakwell, Gillian Wearing, Thomas Demand, Sam Taylor-Johnson, John Latham, David Hall, Stephen Partridge, Bruce McLean, Tony Sinden, Brad Butler and Karen Mirza and many others.

Live music has involved solo performances and multiple collaborations including appearances with Yasuaki Shimizu, Peter Gordon, O Yama O, John Greaves, Rie Nakajima, Scanner, Pan sonic, Kathy Acker, Michael Nyman, John Cage, Mieko Shimizu and others.

Recent projects have included recording and occasionally performing with O Yama O and two ballet scores for Companhia Nacional de Bailado Lisbon, in collaboration with João Penalva and Rui Lopes Graça.
